Can you swap the input shafts on type 9 gearbox?
Discussion
I'm trying to mate up a type 9 gearbox to my Essex v6. I already have a type 9 fitted but the ratios are wrong for the essex, so I've got myself a box out of an XR4i but have found that the input shaft is longer
So can anyone advise me if the shorter shaft from the first box ( believed to be out of a sierra 1.8) will swap into the XR4i ?
Heres hoping

99% sure it can be but the sleeve for the release bearing is also longer on boxes for the V6 engines . I had the same problem with a RWD conversion and even though I ended up using a different box I can remember seeing a website with pics of a chap that changed the input shafts over, struggling to find it now though.
Phone BGH on +44 (01580) 714114, Brian is fantastic on the Type 9 box & will probably be able to do it at reasonable money as well.

Thanks Guys.
I've spoken to a gearbox guy who works a lot on the type 9. He's looking into it and will get back to me. He seems to think that the 1.8 input shaft wont work because the ratios are different, but the 2.0 one is the same ratio on that gear as the 2.8 so should also be the same as the XR4i box. It all hangs on the teeth profiles he says.

It may be of no help but as i seem to remember when fitting the Cologne 2.8i gearbox out of the capri into a 3.0s Essex engined Capri apart from a vary rare bellhousing, that at to have the input shaft cut down/machined,dont know if this is any use but try http://www.burtonpower.com/
Thanks SS.
I've got the bell housing....I've already fitted a type 9 that I was assured came out of a v6 and yes, you have to shorten the input shaft by 14.7mm.... but the ratios in 1st gear are wrong. I have run with it for a year....then it started jumping out of 4th gear on over run....then the clutch center lunched itself......so now I'm trying to fit a stronger type 9 with the correct ratios and have found out I need to use one out of a 2.8 V6, so got myself a box out of an XR4i.....but on putting the boxes side by side noted that the input shafts were different lengths!!....so am now trying to find out if I can swap the shafts over. It's not practical to space the bellhousing or gearbox because I haven't the room to move the box back in the car or shorten the prop. Worst of all is I'm supposed to be going on the Gilbern 50th Birthday run in the Lake District NEXT THURSDAY

Thanks for all your help guys, fingers crossed.

You and me both! I thought the two boxes were the same, but the XR4i box has a longer shaft than the other type 9 I've just taken out
My alternative is the gearbox guy said he can build me up a box with the correct 1st gear using a box with the shorter shaft, but he can't do it with the time scale I've got.
I might just do the clutch and put the old box back in for now and look into this again later when I have more time, just means I need to hold the gear lever in 4th on over run

Brian designed the Caterham 6 speed conversion of the Type 9 & knows & does everything to these boxes.

I hear you my friend
and I'm taking in all the advice etc. I've run out of time to do anything now but put the engine and gearbox back in and plan the change over for next winter
, I just need to have it on the road this week for our 50th celebrations

Wayne.

No problems I've met the guy twice & he's a proper no BS engineer!
