We took our car in to get the clutch cable replaced as it squeeked badly. The cable was replace but now 1st, 2nd and reverse are really hard to engage.

The dealership said that clutch therefore needs replacing and that a faulty cable can mask this.

Are they talking crap? I'll bow to your superior intellect on the matter.

Usually if the cable is suspect...the pedal itself will feel different.

Remove the clutch cable from the box, and see if its operation is smooth

The symptoms are indicative of the clutch not disengaging completely.
They may have fitted the wrong cable or not adjusted it properly.
I would not think the clutch itself is at fault.

So it seems the dealership is having a laugh. I'll take it to an independent and get their opinion.

Nothing new there. I have to wonder if there is one single honest and competent dealership in the entire world?

99.9% they are trying to rob you, 0.1% you have the weirdest clutch cable problem ever heard of. Find an independent garage you can trust. It is almost certainly not adjusted correctly and not disengaging fully when fully down.
