Why it's bad when the Turbo actuator pipe pops off.....
Discussion
Not my car, rebuilding it for a mate. Only did it 600 miles ago with a new lumpy cam, had it mapped etc.
Actuator pipe popped off and boost went through the roof, liner fractured and bye bye!! It's a wet liner engine btw)
Eek. Compression blowback sir?

Mayo with that? ALL of the oil looks like this.

Head gasket intact. Only damage is a tiny crease over where the liner split.

Crack. Not the fun kind.

Apologies for the shyte quality pics, phone is supposed to 5Mpxl but its actually complete rubbish.
I dropped about NINE litres of fluid out of the sump give or take. Everything is full of splurge/gunk. Got the liner out but looking at the state of things I wasn't happy. I **really** didn't wanna but I had to drop the bottom off as well. The oil is so bad I need to check that it hasn't run the Mains or Big ends and it all needs washing out. Check out the pics, I think you'll all agree a simple flush and rebuild wouldn't suffice....
This is what the "oil" looks like now. When I drained it the first litre was blue coolant, literally like I was draining the rad.

This is AFTER the sump was fully drained, and I decided it needed to come apart.

The crankcase strengthener, dripping with goop.

....and oh, whats that in the oil strainer?

Silicon sealer in your oil pump sir?

Blue drip of coolant about to fall in the crankcase. Many, many of these fell on my head. b
d.

As I was messing about undoing stuff, the oil pump decided it didn't like the taste of 'oilant' (see what I did there?) and was sick all over my garage floor. Lovely.

Dropped the CCS. Doesn't look too bad in the block casting, but dreading the bearing carriers. Fingers crossed there's no damage. Tomorrow will tell.
Oh yeah, the liner. Well, nice crack!

Top to within an inch of the bottom, and how a blockfull (and then some) of coolant got into the sump.
Ouch.

It's a Renault 21 Turbo Quadra, with a J7R 752, 1995cc SOHC 8v Turbo'd lump. This one has a few tasty mods- BIG turbo, custom 4-branch manifold, 803 injectors, 3bar MAP sensor, mapped ECU, big exhaust, water injection, FMIC and so on. It's got up in the region of 270-280 brake.
Updated piccies.
First off, a very cool bit of kit. It's technically a socket set, which would be nothing special if it wasn't a socket set for oil filters :icon_lol:
It's bloody brilliant.

Anyway, I digress.
The sump, un-gunked.

Dropping the big ends. Ewwwwwwww. Grim.

Number 4 piston in it's new home

Bearings, starting to grey off a bit. Still, i've reassembled worse lol

"Hmmm. I'm sure there's supposed to be something in there...."

"Ah! there they are!"

Bolted the head back on, nothing very exciting and bumbled on without taking any pics. Then started to scrabble around underneath. Stuffed the CCS and oil pump back on, nice and shiny(ish)

After that I forgot about the camera again lol. Sump pan went on, along with manifolds, belts and all the bits needed to turn the key for a quick tryout.
The pics don't really show it but cleaning all that **** off and all the silicon sealer as well was a fricking MISSION. FIVE hours worth in total, and several litres of petrol. I hate cleaning lol.

- *STOP THREAD*** Where did you get this from? Can I ask what you paid? What a top piece of kit! I need one for my garage now! I'm fed up of using a crappy chain thing from Halfrauds which normally just spins round the oil filter and doesn't "bite".
Thanks again for posting!

Also, how come the liner went first? Would the head gasket not be the "weaker" link?
That thin little bit of liner wall is having to take rather more tension than the head bolts do, and unlike the inter-cylinder web in a non-linered engine it is not supported by the walls of the block. Mind you the webs still go sometimes anyway. As for oil filters my order of escalation goes something like this:
1) Hand (left hand is better)
2) Hands in a sort of "twin leading shoe" grip
3) Improvise a strap wrench using some bit of bar and some bit of old rope or webbing
4) Stick a screwdriver through it.
It very rarely gets as far as number 4.

Part number for my 30pce set here- http://www.toolweb.com.tw/Oil%20Filter/index.htm
There's a few sets on eBay as well, but looks like 15 pce is the biggest.
For those on a budget this 1/2" socket type works well. Make sure to keep the strap clean. Mine is 20yrs old - http://www.toolspot.co.uk/product/1-2indr-strap-fi...
