I have a sierra manual and during the gearbox disassembly it tells you to "drive out the roll pin"

Can I assume that this means I need to knock it thru the hole it is in? I.e. hit it on the top to come out the bottom?!

hit where it needs to be hit for it to come out.

always use a blunt punch the correct diameter for removing such pins.

I would examine both ends of the hole if you can. You may find that it only comes out the way it went in.

Get your magnet on a stick ready to catch the pin. Or it will disappear, never to be seen 'til a full strip down.

Is it the 5th gear selector pin?

That is a good tip.

It is this pin... at the end of the selector shaft...

Might I suggest to sir some quick freeze spray on the pin in question?

It might help things along their way a bit easier.

I assume the tail casing is off the 'box?

That is not a Type 9 box diagram, it looks like a 4 speed box to me.

In the Sierra manual I have for a type 9 box (not the one pictured above, that was the closest picture I could find) it says you cannot remove part 18 until the selector shaft has been removed???

Thanks

The 5 speed (Type 9) box does have a removable end on the selector shaft which is held in with a roll pin. The 4 speed boxes don't, and are just like that exploded diagram.

With a Type 9 you just select reverse (I think!), remove the gear lever assembly and the roll pin on the end of the selector shaft is nicely exposed for you to drift out.

Its not tapered is it? Check the roll pin is not thinner on one side. If it is bash the thin bit!
