just bought a mondeo ghia 1998 2.0 16 valve drove it after picking it up for around 50 miles home and then it all went wrong, just b4 i hit my exit on the motor way it coughed and spluttered then carried on fine for half a mile and then did the same again all the way home. ive striped down all the air intake and cleaned it out, put in new plugs, air filter but still the same. on idle its fine and if touch the throtle gently its fine but soon as you try to drive or touch the trotle that bit harder it splutters (let of its fine again). ive done a bit of reading on the net and a couple of people seem to think its the plug leads breaking down or coil packing up is this right? has anyone else had this problem? dont want to keep ploughing money in and not fixing the problem. thanks for all your help.

Stick a new fuel filter on it 1st, there only cheap and if yours is blocked then it could be causing fuel starvation issues at high loads or speeds.

Try opening the bonnet at night with the engine running to see if you can see any arching from the plug leads also.

yes

Sounds like after 50 miles you sucked some crap through from the tank. Or some water.

Going to have a guess that it'd maybe been standing for a bit and it maybe didn't have much fuel in it.

it could be a coil pack breaking down, more noticeable when putting a bit of load on the engine, giving the feeling of it holding back, but running clean off load...

that exactly what it does if you gently push the trotle all the way down to the floor it will rev fine but soon as you touch the trotle normaly it strugles like mad and then you let of and it revs fine all the way back down to normal idle. thanks

If it isn't the coil pack, it might be a sensor. I believe when you go into WOT (Wide Open Throttle) most engine management units don't read the sensors and do all the complicated calculations for optimal closed-loop fuelling, timing etc, but instead just read values on a table.
