Diesel hard to start
Discussion
Hi all
Have a 406 99 model and its very difficult to start over last couple of weeks. When it does fire there is lots of blue/grey smoke produced. Have to heat the coils at least twice. Was wondering if that the problem and how easy they are to change? Starts fine when been running.
Thanks for any thoughts

You mean glow plugs and from your description it sounds like it.Have a 406 99 model and its very difficult to start over last couple of weeks. They are usually easy enough to change (similar job to spark plugs) and fairly cheap.
They do wear out over time, so its entirely possible.
Just by chance I had a conversation with a Peugeot owner last Sunday while coming back from France on the ferry. He had the same problem as you and took it to a French garage. He said the mechanic removed a piece of rubber tubing from the engine, pressure tested it and found a pinhole laek at one end. He shortened it and replaced it and the problem was solved. Cost 22 euros. You might like to have a look around before you start replacing glowplugs.
Interseting ideas guys cheers.
Left message with local Pug garage to get a price for new plugs and see what they come back with. If they cheap enough then will probably replace anyway as def never been done in my time. Funnily enough battery did go flat after a couple of weeks with no use, but after jumping it its seems OK but yea does seem a fair point. Will keep an eye on situation.

You may want to try GSF and Euro car parts as they will probably be cheaper than a main dealer.Left message with local Pug garage to get a price for new plugs and see what they come back with. Dealer came back with them in stock @ £17.33 each + VAT so gonna cost £80 ish. Yep its the 1.9L D NOT the HDI. Started this morning with two full heats of the glow plugs until the light went out and started fine so starting to assume that the battery is good, just needed to heat up twice?
