Setting TDC with head off.
Discussion
Hi guys,
Just changed the Headgasket on my golf. I know I should have set it up to TDC before I started but I thought marking the pulleys and cambelt up would be enough (worked when I changed the tappets). I fear I may have moved the crank pulley when I tapped the top end to remove it (was well stuck on).
Am I right in thinking if I set the Crank and oil pulleys to the TDC position (they have markings to line up with each other) and then do the same with the cam pulley when the head goes back on, I can then just slip a new cam belt on and not worry about the belt being lined up as the pulleys are all alined?
Hope that makes sense I am learning loads about he internals of engines but still a bit scared of cocking the timing up.

If the head is still off you could put a dti gauge on piston 1 just to double check the marks on the pulley are actually tdc (or just rock the engine around the tdc mark & watch the piston). If the head is on you could carefully stick a screwdriver down the spark plug hole, turn the engine over to check. If the cam is in though, you risk valve/piston contact.
