Hi _ I have one of the above which is being used on a boat engine - it is probably quite old but has been recon. It has 4 connections - BAT and GRD which are obvious and 2 spades marked R and F. Does anyone know what these are and where can I mget info on this item. Thanks

F is field, connect to ignition-controlled live via charge warning light.

R I have no idea but the chances are you can leave it unconnected and it won't make any difference. Rev counter output maybe.

Yup I reckon R is rev counter, it'll be off a deseasal which doesn't have an ignition output. It is also floating ground hence the earth connection.

I think this will be an American alternator with it having these connections, these are wired in a completely different way to European ones, so don't wire it as above.
The f and r wires are a standard format on Yank alternators, but are wired in various ways depending if they have an internal or external regulator.
If it has an internal regulator, then I think f (field exciter) goes to a switched positive supply, and r goes to a relay (for warning light) but
I think you can connect r directly to the warning light without the relay.
I'm fairly sure this is correct but not 100%.

Many thanks for your replies. I have now established that it needs an external regulator fed from the positive supply as one side of the field is connected direct to ground and the other is connected to the F spade.
