Hi guys

Just done a HG change on my Mk2 golf. Set it to TDC and timing seems ok, however idle is very lumpy and dosnt smooth out until 2k rpm. I have done a quick vid so you can hear it (better than me describing it). It does seem to sound like its air cooled lol

I have had a look at the oil cap and there is some mayo on it. The crank breather pipe and filter seems full of it as well, could this cause it to run rough and for it to stall when stopping at junctions etc?

Mayo means little.

Clean or replace the breathers and find out. The engine will normally draw some air through the crankcase, so it could affect running

Water in the oil isn't conclusive. Check the coolant too. If you have scum or mayo in there it's a very bad sign, especially if it froths a lot when revved with the pressure cap off.

right sorted the running, the plug on injector 1 wasnt plugged in (doh). Seems to smoke a fair bit and when I stopped (just went round the block) there was a hissing noise with smoke comming from the engine bay. Going to check all the nut n bolts and give it an oil change as it looks like waters got in some where. Quite a lot of water came out of the head when I took it off and ended up in the cylinders, however I did dry that all up but I guess some has worked its way into the sump.
