Some gearboxes have a sort of a vague feel about them which is uninspiring and also in my opinion increases the risk of choosing a wrong gear by accident e.g. 2nd instead of 4th.

My question is, can you sprigten a bad gearbox up in any way so it becomes more defined and more likely to shift precisely into the correct gear and in the process makes it more sort of self-centrering so that you always know exactly which gear is going to be engaged? ( When driving on a racetrack it's pretty handy not going to 2nd instead of 4th for example)

Just fix the linkage and all will be well.

A language problem I suspect.

The lack of precision in a gear shift is likely down to old age and may be resolved by replacing worn parts in the shift mechanism which are often plastic.
The bias to third/forth is provided by a spring and again will become weak with age. Replacing the spring or even fitting a stronger than original spring my also work wonders.

Assuming you are talking about a transaxle, then avoiding any kind of cable operated gearchange is a good start. Some are better than others, but none offer the feel of a good rod based remote.

Thanks

Just wondered what one could do to make the shifting itself better and more safe as some cars aren't that defined whereas others practically knows exactly which gear you want to chose every time.
