I've got a 1991 Ford Sierra 1.8 litre CVH engine fitted in a recently built kit car - a Royale Sabre if it's relevant.

Although the car's only done 500 miles since being completed, so far it's been excellent. Not overly quick and I might change the engine over the winter for something with a bit more poke, but generally the car's going fine and looks superb. Get loads of admiring comments especially now that I've got it here in the South of France.

However last weekend something weird happened to my tickover - it just disappeared. No noise or fuss, just wouldn't tick over. I'd been driving it for about an hour stop start around town and then all of a sudden it wouldn't tick over. Sort of happened all of a sudden but no other symptoms or problems at all. Foot off the throttle, slowest speed from the engine now is 2,500rpm. Or zero of course if I turn the ignition off. But there's no funny noises or squeals or anything and I've checked the linkage and all is fine. Just can't slow the tickover down. Started it a couple of times since and it starts and runs fine, just won't tickover at a sensible speed.

Tried adjusting the throttle stop but I'd have to turn it a long long way to get it back down to 700rpm and not sure there's enough adjustment there anyway.

So anybody got any ideas before I take it to a garage?

Does it have a carb or is it single point injection?

Sounds to me like you have an air leak.
Assuming it is efi then there will likely be an EAV (Extra Air Valve) which is there to control tickover and give a little extra air when warming up. This may have jammed open. Because they are in the inlet tract they become grubby so a strip and clean often works wonders.

No, it's not injected, definitely a carb. But since I'm not near the car till Monday, couldn't tell you which one

Check that there is 12v at the connector on the fuel valve on the carb when engine running, also it could be air an leak (vac hose off/split or a gasket gone) or a blocked jet in the carb.

i agree with oakdale, check the feed to the carb, a leak on the induction side of the fuel system would cause hunting, and you would really notice a lack of power at higher rpm (2000+) if the induction leak was enough to prevent idle.

Due to lack of time I took it to a local garage and got them to fix it. Left it with them for just over an hour and it's all done. They say "a spring was broken and a bracket was bent" though for the life of me I can't see which or where, but either way it's all fixed now.

So thanks to everyone who contributed and answered my question.

Again, many thanks
