Right, I had the opportunity to get a free corsa engine that had stopped working. I was going to take it appart simply to help me learn more about how an engine works and give me more confidence with mechanical stuff. However i went off the idea as the engine would be controlled buy an ecu and electrical stuff that wouldnt be with the engne, so id never be able to start it, and would never know if id put it back together correctly. So i want an engine with mechanical ignition. Any ideas for which engine would be good and where i could get one? I want a 4 stroke petrol with cams. Was thinking maybe an old fiat uno engine would fit the bill?

Any books which give advice on stripping down engines, servicing and rebuilding - please recommend.

CHEERS.

you could always get the corsa engine, strip it to bits then bin it. Not a lot of point doing a rebuild as it'd cost you a bit in gaskets etc and you wouldn't end up with anything amazing, but you'll still learn a bit

I did the same thing very recently. I stripted and built a ford xflow. Really straight forward and lots of literature avalible. I also make reference to four stroke performance tuning by a. Graham bell

Any other questions just ask smile

How about a Mini engine? There are always owners of various vintage Minis wanting replacement engines. Equally, there are loads in the scrapyards with rusting bodies.

Get "Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology" by V.A.W Hillier.

Couple of quid on amazon. Explains everything from cranks, to carbs, to injection, to dag-dag's, etc. Very good book.
