Hi guys,

Just fitted a new HG on my Mk2 Golf GTI. Started her up and sounded fine, idles better than it did before and no smoke (was dripping oil between the head and the block). However when its reved to 3k rpm and held there it will chuck a lot of blue smoke out the back with a burnt oil smell.

There is no oil in the water and no water in the oil so I think the gasket is ok. Could it be oil that has got into the exhaust manifold just burning off or is it likly the valve guides could have gone?

I would not worry about any oil smell or smoke in the first warm up cycle or two ..

Did you change the valve stem oil seals ?

Didnt change anything in the top end. Might give it a run around the block tonight to see if it clears. We did have the block on its side to clean it off so I am guessing oil could have passed between the valves then.

well had a look tonight the water is full of oil and there is a real nasty knock/clang noise from the engine after a run (sounds like a bag of spanners)

I am going for its fked.

Think I will chuck it on ebay and see if some youth with more time on his hands wants a shell for an project.
