Problem with ZF auto gearbox
Discussion
Hi guys, I need some advice,
I've got a 2000 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage automatic with 55,000 miles on the clock.
The problem is that when I start it up from cold and select a gear (Drive or Reverse) there is a groan from the system then a clunk as it selects and then the car lurches forward or back (depending on what is selected) like the clutch is dragging (on a manual car). Once it is up and running the gear selection is fine and when the car is warm gear selection from stop is smooth.
It is a 5 speed ZF SHP30 auto as found in many BMWs and possibly Jags as well.
I had the gearbox oil changed recently and it was quite dirty, this has not cured the problem.
It is not causing me a problem as all I have to do is select the gear and release the brake and off we go but if I select it and stay on the brake then it complains.
Any info on likely cause appreciated, am I likely to do any damage by ignoring it--what do you reckon?

Phone John Mackie, very helpful and very knowledgeable; http://www.mackie-transmission.com/
Whilst this is very much Land Rover oriented they are a gearbox specialist & the following from their FAQ section might be the problem
