Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone knew anywhere in the UK that sells paper cone filters, like a K&N kind of thing. I'm doing an experiment with a home made induction kit and have read almost universally that paper filters clean the air better. I want to prove the theory that the filter is rarely the restricting element and that the design of the airbox is. I've found somewhere near me that does carbon fiber fabrication so will be making up a proper heatshield and using silicon tubing. Then I'll measure the airflow difference from stock and then swap on a K&N filter and post my results, it's going to be a couple of months because I'm out of the country but I think it would be useful for quite a few people. Spent ages on Google and can only find the ones for coffee machines! frown

Paper air filters are more restrictive than oil filters like K&N.

On some Triumph's you can replace the standard paper filters with K&Ns inside the standard airbox (so taking the other variables out of the equation)) and give you and extra ~10BHP.

For a given filter area, paper is more restrictive than cotton filters. However, OEM paper filters generally have more and deeper pleats than replacement cotton filters and hence a larger surface area. Comparing filters of approximately the same physical size but with greatly differing surface areas is not very useful. Flow when new is also only one aspect, you need to consider how the flow is affected as the filter gets progressively clogged by particles or dirt.

Any filter is only restrictive if it doesnt have sufficient surface area for any air to pass through.

If it has adequate capacity, then paper is probably the best choice all round. And obviously airbox design will play a aprt.

But arent your tests just going to prove what is obvious ? A lot will depend on how much air is being passed through the filter too.
