Choosing a turbo - Volvo T5
Discussion
Gents,
I'm using a Volvo T5 engine in a kit car, and am currently in the process of trying to source a turbo, there's a few different volvo ones to choose from, but some seem to go for silly money as they're so rare. I think i'm going to have to make my own manifold, so one option is to use a more common turbo that will be cheaper and easier to find.
But how to choose a turbo?
I'm planning on running an Emerald ECU, and would like to aim for around 300bhp, but with smooth delivery and minimal lag.
Can anyone suggest a turbo to use?
Thanks

I'm going to make my own manifold, so the flange doesn't matter.
Ideally i'd like to use a turbo thats OEM on something be it cosworth, evo, impreza etc... that way it should be easy to find
One of the things that I don't get is the different trims with all the different turbo models, makes it quite tricky to pick one.

The Cossie turbos are ancient junk.
The more modern Mitsi ir IHI units used on Subarus or Evo's would be a betetr start.
Ar as Charlie says, the likes of a GT28 based unit, some of which are on Nissan 200's
I think some Volvo's use a Mitsi too.
Something like a VF34/5 from a modern STI subaru would spool well on your 2.3, and easily make 300bhp.
Not sure what turbos are used on modern VAG 1.8t engines, but they might be another option.
But 300bhp would be very easy to achieve from all but the crappest of turbos.

The GT28RS is a common upgrade on the 200SX so you will easily find one, A TDO5 16G off a Subau Impreza would also work, as would the VF34/35Ideally i'd like to use a turbo thats OEM on something be it cosworth, evo, impreza etc... that way it should be easy to find

I'm no expert ( i currently have the standard 16T in my T5), but I have read of favourable results using the Garrett GT2871R T3 .63 - http://forums.t5d5.org/index.php?showtopic=9130
It's also common to use the KKK24 or K24 that were fitted to the later models.
It may be worth registering at http://forums.t5d5.org/ and asking, there are a few very well set up T5's on there
