'02 BMW 318i oil leak

Parent's BMW has had an oily smell to it for the first few minutes of running for a while but with no great loss of oil from the engine. They've been told by a garage after a period of looking for the leak that there is a leak on the back of the engine but due to the amount of work to get to it, it's not worth doing (115k mile car). I'm just curious what is the leak likely to be coming from (parent's didn't ask garage
