Rover V8 belt configurations
Discussion
I have a serpentine Rover V8 with no power steering or air con so the belt winds its merry way around the crank pulley, water pump, alternator and two idlers. I am trying to take some weight off the car and wondered if there is any commonly used belt configuration that gets rid of at least one of the idlers. The Ideal solution would be to mount a light weigh alternator on a tensioned bracket and ditch both of the existing idler arrangements. To get adequate wrap round the water pump the alternator would have to be snuggled in the V where the Distributor would be if there was one fitted. Any ideas anybody ?
Its the only pic of what I did, as I dont have room to mount the alternator high, I used a Toyota Denso alternator, 75 amp, so it runs all I need, a minimalist car, nowt electrical other than the lights and wipers, and the modern update of Electric fan, Electric Fuel pump, Emerald ECU and injectors, thats all realy,

What belt to use, all I did was wind the alt adjuster right in to its minimum, cut my original belt and wrapped it around the pulleys as tight as I could, get somebody to mark where the belt overlaps the cut end, measure that length, the belt coding generally is preixed or suffixed with the number of ribs, so it could bo 06, 07, 08 etc or 006 etc for the number of ribs, the belt lenght for example if the easured lenght is 987 would probably be rounded up to 990, so the belt coding should read something like 06/0990, or the coding be "unpicked" from other bits of parts numbers, but a good parts shop should be able to find just what you want, or at a push, a bearing suppliers will have all the details of what you will need to know,
