heater fan intermittant fault (astra)
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Wondering if you can help.
My Astra MK4 Van (1.7 TD ENVOY) seems to have an annoying habit (amongst others) whereby the heater fan will:
Not start when it's turned on
Stop working whilst running
Stop working when setting changed, eg 4-2
It started happeneing last year but it was off the road for some of the winter as the EDU went up the wonk and had to scrape together cash to get that replaced.
So, it might start when the engine's started, then stop.
It might not start when the engine's started then sometimes starts up randomly later on, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why it starts, if it does.
What is interesting is that when it does (it's always on 4 so i know when it works again) it blows for a bit, then stops, then starts for a while. So it sounds like:
OOOooo...ooOOOOOOOooo..{}....OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The heat is nice and hot when it does come on, or cold if the engine is cold or the switch is on low.
Any ideas what it could be? It's getting really dangerous in this weather.
I guess:
Fan switch
Fan motor
???
Where should I start looking?
Thanks, Xenocide.

It may just be the switch, I had one like that.
However, it is more likely to the the resistor pack which is attached to the heater blower motor.
It should be straightforward to swap over.
Under the dash (I should think the left hand side) and look for a kind of bowl shaped motor housing with (usually) 4 thick (30 amp) wires on a plug.
After that, you're on your own
It is usually a case of two phillips (star) screws to undo and the resistor pack will come out. They used to have a big green variable resistor with several connections for 3v, 6v, 9v and 12v.
