Rover 75 diesel starter motor wiring problem
Discussion
Hi,i have a 1999 Rover 75 turbo diesel. The wire going to teh spade connector on the starter is giving me some problems, there must be a chaff or slight break in the wire really close to the starter.Once the wire is in a position the car likes it will start ok for days on end, then suddenly click, you'll just hear the solenoid click, jump out the car, move the wire slightly to a different position and it always starts!Question is would it be ok to run a fresh new wire from the positive of the battery to the spade connector on the starter?Or will this burn out the starter? Thanks!
If the wire in question is a very thin wire (not a big fat one) then it is the solenoid supply from the ignition switch. Do not connect it straight to the battery or the starter will crank constantly! If you think there is a break near the end you could cut off a couple of inches and make a new section of wire. However, as the starter clicks all the time that would suggest the wire is actually ok (unless it has a very resistance, but no break) and the fault lies with the starter itself.

I don't think it's my imagination but when it doesn't start, moving the wire definetly makes it start.I'll just try cutting out the last section of it and put a new spade on it and see what happens, thanks!
Sounds more like a brake in the solenoid in the starter motor. Is it more prone to start if you whack the starter motor with a rubber mallet?
The nippon denso starter motors on those cars are really prone to wearing out the contacts in the solenoid. You can get new ones for £12, including a new solenoid plunger. It's a very beefy starter on those, that will last for the life of the car, let down by having poor specc'd contacts.
I know you think it's a wire, but the symptoms are exactly as you describe, and its a massively common fault.
For £12, I'd be looking at that first really.
