Hi all

Hoping there's a T5 gearbox guru on here!

I have just replaced the input shaft bearing on my TVR Cerbera T5 gearbox. The part numbers of the bearing was exactly the same as the old one.

I jabe put the same shims in the bearing retainer and behind the input shaft as came out. With it bolted up to 15 lb ft there is no play whatsoever in the shaft (up and down or end float) but it is very stiff to turn. I can just about turn it with 1 hand.

Is this too tight? I was expecting it to move quite freely.

When I pulled the gearbox the bearing retainer was quite loose so I have no comparison to make.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Ed

Definitely shouldn't be stiff to turn. You need to choose the appropriate shim(s) to get the required play. I had a go at mine and it took ages to get right, I couldn't get the right shims and ended up buying another bearing retainer from gearboxman.co.uk which luckily was slightly different to the one I had.
Have a look here for an easy(ish) way to set it up http://www.pomoforacing.com/tech/T5Rebuild2002.pdf page 21.
gearboxman can probably supply a shim too set if needed.

I used to use one of those Smalley wave springs in place of the middle shims these make teh whole process much easier and help shut the box up when hot.

All sorted now. Thanks for your help.

The bearing was not fully seated on the shaft.

Cheers
