waterlogged ecu Peugeot 307cc - 06 plate
Discussion
Would like some input regarding my ecu which died when the thermister broke and coolant tracked down the wires and basically the unit has blown. No warning came up, and I've been informed by peugeot tech that it won't but when put on diagnostic loads of faults showed although initial fault was throttle body and unit ..replaced as cost of around £300...didn't make a bit of difference. Repair will cost around £1300 for new ecu plus minor bist. Seems to me to be a bad design and one, again from the tech, that is quite common.
Has anyone else heard of this or experienced thi?...intend discussing with Peugeot that they shoukld pay as it's not strictly wear and tear to my mind. Any opinions?

it can be pretty common, the sensors are hugely weatherproofed, so if they break down, they can act as a little pressurised pipe directly to the ecu.
try contacting some ecu repairers, they are out there, and usually they are designed with a sacrificial diode or fuse to blow rather than expensive components

Hi louise 1985
Well they are fitting a new one...I did get peugeot to contribute £380 towards the cost which is not great but better than nothing, and am waiting to hear when it will be ready. I did ask the tech who is working on it... was itguaranteed?... and he said for a year. I did say what happens if it does it again and gets waterlogged..like just when the guarantee runs out?... and he said it can't do that now as they've fitted a switch which prevents it happening. I then said...oh, so it was a design fault then...they should have had a recall.... and he kind of agreed!!!
So...watch this space. Hopefully I won't have any problems but if I do I'll be on here to let you know and onto peugeot like a rash!

what plate is your car? I phoned Customer services and moaned. My car was 6 months out of warranty but really the ecu is not something that should go wrong I didn't think. The guy kept saying that it was no longer covered by warranty and things do go wrong but I told him that the ecu didn't actually have a problem in itself..the problem was caused by a minor breakdown of the sensor and causing the coolant leak...not on!!!!
Did you have repair at Peugeot garage? Was your service history up to date? Regardless of where you had repair done I would call Peugeot customer service and say you want 1. some contribution (the amount will probably depend on age of car) 2. advice as to what you do next as the problem remains unsorted. See what they say...they will take a log number and a manager should call you back within 5 days. In the meantime go back to the garage who did your repair and say you want it sorted...were they helpful in the first instance and how did they respond when you told them you still had problems?...did they say it was still water that was causing it? Hope you have a courstesy car! Good luck

Mine is an 06, same as your right?? mine actually had an extemded warranty at the time it went wrong with a company called warranty management services/ They claimed that they would not cover it as it was water damage and not a mechanical failire. Like you i had a throttle position sensor fitted and the problem was still there.
The new ecu was fitted by another garage but obviously the ecu part was purchased through peugeot which means it has a years warranty. The garage that the car was fixed at dont even know where the water was coming from and still went ahead with replacing te ecu without rectifying the water problem in the first place. He claims now that it probably (he is 80% sure) that it is coming through the loom which to replace this (which is still no guarentee) will be around £500, bearing in mind i have already paif £915.50.
I have been back to the garage because after month and a half of no car i picked it up he stated that the new ecu was fitted and everything was fine but 2 weeks later back in the same situation, so when i took it back this is when he started talking about the loom and that it needed to be replaced. He said he could reset the ecu spray something on it to disperse the water which would bide me a little time instead of replacing the loom but to get shot of the car becuase i was not willing to pay out another £500.00. I tool the carand after a week of driving it again the problem occured once again. he has my car at the minute and has told me he has fixed it! (sprayed something on it again). This means that a week down the line or maybe sooner the problem will be there once again

Easy to say get shot of it...no-one will buy it with such a problem! I'd def contact peugoet and explain problem. Also get back to garage and you could mention office of fair trading... if the water was causing the problem in the first place and he didn't fix it it would seem obvious to any numpty that it would happen again and wreck the new ecu. he should repair the cause of the leak...as I said mine was the sensor I think someone commented on it in this discussion (post 2) and that it's quite common which was also said by the tech doing my repair. So it's probably that that's the problem...technical name may be loom but I don't know.
Say you will pay for that to be done but that you want a new ecu and he has to pay for it... £800 for a weeks use is just not right!
Total for my repair is just under £1300 ecu was £742 plus VAT...the rest is labour and replacement of the sensor and something else which was causing coolant leak. Good luck again. May be an idea to contact office of fair trading just to talk through your options with them. I know the feeling..it's like you are banging your head agianst an expensive brick wall...but hang on in there. Any chance you can get a car to use while he figures things out?

Exactly no-one in their right mind would buy the car> see when i read this i aso rang up and spoke to the ecu doctor and they gave me advice of has he checked all the sensors and to maybe go to trading standards too. All the garage is saying is ive told you that you need the loom replaced and that the ecu is not that badley damaged not like last time so with replacing the loom it would work fine.
So you total is £1300 but peugeot are paying for £380 of that?
I knopw tell me about it i cant afford this as it is and its so frustrating feel like im back to square one even though ive paid out so much money. I dont have a courtesy car? how did you manage to get one as its not like the car has been in an accident

My insurance covers me for one, if car is in for service or repair...the garage also will give one but you would only be covered on their insurance for 24 hours and then you have to put on your own. The garage you're dealing with may not have courtesy cars...have a look at your insurance...technically it's a breakdown so if you have that cover it may be on that. Check and see. I know it's really frustrating but you must call office of fair trading/trading standards as they will contact garageman for you if they fel that he is not acting correctly...and I don't think he is.
Keep the faith!

i think they contacted the peugeot dealer where my car had been taken ...presumably for a report. Don't know how this works if it is with a non peugeot dealer garage. Don't see why there should be a problem as they can talk to your guy even if he seems to be not helping you out much... or you could get it to your nearest peugeot dealer..and let them take over. Then you have problem as you've already paid out for new ecu with someone else...anyone else out there got any bright ideas?????
My car ecu isn't coming til at least the 20th... that's a month so far!

Well had a bit more progress yesterday with my car i went to pick it up from the mechanic he was being a bit more reasonable. He is still saying the loom needs changing but he is going to contact the local peugeot tech to find out if there is an easyier way to rectify this problem without changing the whole car loom. When you explained to me that peugeot have guarenteed it wont happen again becuase they have fitted a switch i think its possible to do this to my car? I was wondering if you could find out if possible what this switch is called and where its going. I have a feeling deep down that pergeot know this is a manufacturing prob but there is a way round it which costs them less money by fitting the switch. Ifthe mechanic states there is a solution by fitting a switch i will then take to peugeout to carry out work and will be getting customer care to contact them to look at some sort of compensation.. hope that makes sense Even though ive paid out a new ecu with someone else it is still been purchased with peugeut its peugeot part and if they had built the car better in the first place i would not of had a wet and damaged ecu!!
I think the switch is now an integral part of the replacement ecu and not something separate... that's how I understood it. Have not a clue what an ecu is let alone how it functions!!! From what my mechanic said it seems like they've altered the design (ie with a swith) so that it can't now be waterlogged by coolant tracking down the wires as happened with yours (probably) and mine. So...to me that implies that the original design was not fit for purpose and as they've obviously had quite a lot of these problems they've redesigned it someway to stop this fault occuring.
You can ask peugeot customer care ... and see what they say! Doubt they'll fess up that anything was wrong!

tted and conned. Take the car to someone who knows what they are doing and speak get a second opinion then speak to trading standards.
