Ford Ka: Not charging

I have a ford Ka (1.3 R-reg) that i am trying to fix for a friend, and im stumped!
Prehaps the good people of PH may be able to help?
It had a new battery fitted 2 days ago by a garage, then last night it died again, the battery had drianed flat, the alternator was not charging. So, this moring I have fitted an alternator to it. The battrey was left on charge overnight.
With the new alternator fitted and the battery charged up, it still only reads just about 12v with the engine running. When i turn on all the lights, heated screen etc, it drops to 9volts, It seems its still not getting any power from the alternator.
any ideas?
