Old fashioned diesel tuning?

Good evening chaps,

I have a reasonable understanding of how things work with regards to engine tuning, but diesels are new and intriguing grounds for me.

Basically, if I were to take a mid 90s BMW TDS engine (or something along those lines) and fit a bigger turbo/intercooler etc etc, would I be able to run Megasquirt or Emerald management or do these engines pre-date any sort of electronic management on diesels?

Sorry if this makes me sound like a moron but there doesn't seem to be much done with the M51 diesel engine and as such I can find little to no information regarding them other than those power booster things that take them to 170ish bhp.

They run Bosch DDE ecus, which control fueling amounts, and boost is purely mechanical.
i guess you could tinker a little fiddling with the fuel pressure and turbo actuators though
