Are these a complete waste of time or is there some experimental evidence to support some of the claims for reduced bore/piston ring wear?

I reckon the best UCL's are 2 stroke oil. I use 0.5% fully synthetic in my FF. I don't suppose its a great idea it the engine has a CAT though.
