I am driving a Clio 1.2 of 02 vintage...recently I've had a couple of mildly concerning moments when the throttle has stuck wide open. It releases when I stamp on the pedal but I'd rather it didn't happen. I'm going to take out the floor mat for a few days and 'test' it like that in case it's the obvious, but does anyone on here have experience of this problem?

I've done a quick net search and can't find any examples of it on Clios specifically.

Thanks in advance.

The throttle is electronic, so its either the sensor on the throttle, the Engine management computer or the throttle body.

The throttle sensor would be my first guess, but it should be turning lights on in the dash.

The pedal actually sticks down...

And I highly doubt an 02 Clio has a DBW throttle.

More than likely a sticky cable..but I'd think either a sticky cable or pedal would be easy for even a total novice to establish.

If you're still stuck....try calling a Toyota dealer tongue out

I thought all Phase II clio IIs are DBW, but checked my Haynes and yes early 1.2's are cable, D7F engine, Later D4F engines are DBW.

All others are DBW.

I can un-happily confirm that my later 1.2 04 plate clio II has a dbw throttle, and I chuffing hate them.

Wow...I'm surprised something as old and mundane would use DBW. French too....just asking for trouble there !!!

Seriously, it sucks, the throttle response is crap, stab your foot to the floor and back and it wont even register the throttle has been pressed, no engine response what so ever.

I'm also fairly sure in saying its the throttle mapping that does this, but 50/60% throttle is as good as pressing it 100%. Mega irritating as you think you have some poke left, but when the throttle is flat to the floor, it makes no difference, 60% pressed or 100%.... thanks Renault, brilliant job there. *shakes angry old mans fist*

As you say it depends on the mapping, and the version of engine, I have the diesel which is also DBW, no problems with throttle response on mine.

The DBW throttles work differently which is what confuses some people and the tuners who developed the systems in the first place. Some have been badly setup in either software or tune which can impact performance. (too heavy filtering, hence lag)

It's not at 60% is 100%, it's the rate at which you press the pedal that has a bigger impact on the operation, certainly in the diesel there is a 3D map with position and differential position (speed) to determine boost requirements, fuel pressure and timing requirements.

There are also current rev's, torque and all sorts of other inputs into these mappings, it's not linear.

On the diesel there is an overboost facility, basically if it sees the pedal pressed at a speed greater than a certain amount and the position is greater than a certain amount, for 5-6secs you get 20% more boost.

Could also be the pedal in yours need recalibrating.

I took the mat out today and have been to Cambridge and back with no sticking. Think it was the mat.

So did I actually, though I'm not going to take up the suggestion of a re map or the like of the pedel profile as hopefully by the end of the summer I should have my new toy biggrinbiggrinbiggrin!
