Gearbox scav pump
Discussion
Has anyone fitted a scavenge oil pump to a gearbox before?
I am in the process of rebuilding my t56 gearbox and i have broke a few bearings and a generated alot of heat around 5/6.
I have heard that you buy small 12v oil scavenge pump, drill and tap a feed into the rear of the box, and then drill and tap a hole where i want the oil to be squirted.
What sort of pump would i need?
Is there chance of the oil foaming up due to the pump?
If so do i need addatives to stop this?
The gearbox is a t56 out of a vauxhall monaro
the gearbox oil is royal purple
Thankyou

Most people use the Tilton diaphram pump:

some people say they are unreliable, but mainly i think people don't install them very well. Big advantage of using a seperate scav pump is not only the ability to target specific gears with oil jets, but also to fit an in-line oil cooler to drop the bulk oil temp, which on highly loaded gears will help as much as more oil!

The people who fit pumps, do so to feed oil onto the primary and 1st etc gears at the front of the box, as oil moves rearwards under acceleration.
Cant really see any need for the rearmost gears. ie 5th or 6th.
I would think the damage to yours is just bad luck. Although in some way, the Monaro box must be different to the Camaro, as the Monaro boxes really do seem to be troublesome.

thinking about it again your right in theory 5/6 shouldnt run dry as the oil would move that way.Cant really see any need for the rearmost gears. ie 5th or 6th.

I have been informed that the camaro boxes are different to the monaro ones.
Im just trying to work out why a thrust washer friction welded itself to 5/6 syncro, maybe your right and it was just bad luck. I did only launch at around 1800rpm.
I have had my suspicions that my clutch has been on its way it for a while, its not been slipping but seems to overheat quicker which is why i ordered a new one a while ago. I don't know if it was a combination of things that went wrong.
I dont know if a scav pump squirting oil at all the gears would help ie two or more squirters, or am i just wasting time and money?
All I can say is that ive never had any box problems.
And the pump/squirters is usually only on real top end performers.
By all means fire away as it wont do any harm. But as to whether its needed or not. I'd say not for 99% of cases.
Was there always plenty of oil on the box, and what oil ?

there seemed to be plenty of oil, monkfish changed it less than 12 months ago, and there were no oil leaks. I was going to change it before i did the event but never got round to it due to other issues. And the pump/squirters is usually only on real top end performers.

The oil is royal purple syncromesh, the stuff monkfish sell, but i dont know if its the best stuff for a t56.
Also stevie do you have bronze fork pads and if you do how many miles has the box done? Its just that ive heard some yanks claiming that they can wear out in as little as 5k miles.
Couldnt honestly tell you what the exact internals are.
It was a fully rebuilt package, with all the bits they can but into them, viper mainshaft, cryo'd gears, carbon blockers as the yanks call them, and stronger shifty parts. Although not sure what.
The first T56 I had I probably did about 15k on it, although it was 100% standard ( unless the used vehicle it came from had been uprated ) and never gave any trouble at all.
I still keep it as a spare.
Then this box, which has maybe done 6-7k I think.
I used Fuchs ATF 4000 in the first box. I use the Aussie Mainlube 154 in the current box.
