Hi there. I own a 1998 mkII mondeo which is suffering from overheating problems. I replaced the radiator as it had split at the top but this didn't solve the problem. I then replaced the thermostat, and still no joy. The car still has a small leak on the thermostat housing which i will get around to replacing soon (if it's gonna be worth it). What leads me to think it may be the head gasket is i am getting a hell of a large amount of air coming into the cooling system and it does smell of engine fumes. I have checked the oil and see no signs of water on the dipstick or the filler cap, all clean and good there. My 2nd question is: if it does require a gasket replacement, considering the age of the car and the value (around £500) is it worth throwing money at it or should i send her to the breakers and cut my losses?

Loosing water?
No emulsion on filler cap though so not going into the oil
High temps?
Sort out the leaks maybe first but before you spend money on a new headgasket job, try a £10 bottle of K-Seal from your local motorist shop.
Won't work for everyone I guess but you'll suprised how many headgasket failures it fixes.
I had got to the point of hydraulic lock in the cylinder and using litres of water. So far after K-seal, 2000 miles and three cup fulls of water.
hope I'm not tempting faith now.

How do you use K-seal? I have an old banger that may be heading for a head gasket failure; but before sending it to the scrapper, I would like to see if £10 will keep it going for a while longer.

Personally I wouldn't use K seal as it will block more than it fixes, get a sniffer kit to determine HG failure then make a decision,

Details given to me by someone in the trade. Buy bottle, open top, pour into radiator or header tank. Drive off.
2400 miles and still going. Wish it would sort out the ABS light.

Little bit of a bump, but I thought i'd just say something here. I had this exact problem on my mondeo, temperature guage was showing super hot, and the thermostat housing was leaking.

What happens is, air gets into the thermostat housing, which IIRC also houses the temperature sensor. Air heats up quicker then water, so the temperature guage reads the air temperature. Also, as there's an air leak in the system, the water will boil, because it's not under pressure.

So from my experience, replacing the thermostat housing will solve all your problems.

The fact that the header tank/ rad smells of exhaust fumes (rather then the stale air/ coolant smell) does say headgasket/ cracked head
