Diesel eurobox first registered in 2003. Spends most of it's life on 30ish mile journeys on dual carriageways or steady A roads. Driven sympathetically.

First 'box fails at 54k miles, at 4 years old. Manufacturer pays half replacement cost as agrees this is a premature failure.

Car returned with g/box leak (from driveshaft seal) and, although fixed, concern raised at time that oil loss might have compromised new box life - concern rejected.

Now, barely 3 years and 50k further down the road, history repeats itself and I end up with replacement costs that are more than the car is worth.

Manufacturer says 'tough'.

Although not done by franchised dealer, car has had regular maintenance and gearbox not on service schedule in any event.

Manual 6 speed box, as fitted to many cars and light vans across several brands (10 points for guessing).

Take it on the chin or have a proper row?

I'd have a proper row personally.. no gearbox should be cream crackered at 50k

Well, it is used on several Vauxhalls, Nissans and, yep, you got it, Renaults...

I had actually decided on a row but was looking to justify the unpleasantness to come smile

1.9 DCi?

As fitted to Vivaro/Trafic vans, which are well known to having a penchant for eating their own cogs? Just a guess...

To be fair, Ive also heard that the gearbox in the vans are notoriously unreliable

Obviously they should be reliable and last a very long time. It just seems that they are particularly bad, for whatever reason.

But again, they are French.
