My cousin's daughter attempted to drive her 1.4 twinport Corsa home with a warning light on. RAC towed her in after the engine cried enough. 04 plate 65,000 miles serviced at 60,000. A bit of oil on the lhs of engine otherwise looks ok. Don't know what light it was. Replacement engines seem thin on the ground so am wondering if a repair can be made without too much pain. Starter motor just clicks at the moment. Are special tools required to dismantle the thing? Do the valves kiss the pistons when the chain goes? Pro help appreciated.

If the starter motor just clicks and assuming the starter motor itself is not actually at fault then it would seem the engine is seized. Without further information it would be hard for anyone to advise you but I suspect the engine is a write off.

I was going to reply earlier myself.

But when the OP gives no useful information whatsoever.....what is the point ?

Like a warning light, that he has no clue what it is. Maybe it was the hazards flashing ?

Or the engine cried enough ? Maybe it reads well for some....but not very helpful to anyone trying to diagnose.

Given the RAC towed you, surely they offered some information as to possible damage ?

I am afraid I don't know which warning light came on. Young female driver, my cousin is also a female. You know as much about the car as I do. Certainly wasn't the hazard lights. I was thinking maybe these engines had a common fault with their timing chains snapping about the 60k mark and if a repair was feasible instead of engine swap.

Without knowing the damage, or even having a clue what's wrong, its a bit premature talking about replacement engines etc

If you did have to go down that route...is the car worth it ?

Put a battery pack on and the engine turns over without firing. The sound of it spinning suggests lack of compression on at least 1 cylinder. The car is tidy and they sell for 2.5-3k so it must be worth sorting. Was hoping for knowledgable specific experience replies rather than negative timewasting.

Sorry to add to the negativity but you are effectively wasting other peoples time by expecting them to have psychic abilities. Without far more information than you have given it's impossible to make any useful suggestions.

OK, based on the very useful information you have given us. Yes, you're engine is fked, and it will cost £2998.54 to repair.
