Budget £120-£150 required for home tinkering. Any suggestions? Heard good things about the halfords professional set for the money.

Halfords 150pc would be a good starter.

Dont worry, its almost always on offer smile

Unless you are working on loads of different cars it may be better value to just buy the tools you need.

I have one of the larger halfords kits and ive been very happy with it. However on my Honda I only need a very small selection of the tools in the kit.
If I were buying tools again I might just buy the specific sockets and spanners I need for my car.

does depend on the car

my Audi has lots of 16 and 18mm fixings - not normally in the standard set up

Another heads up. If you think you may want to take advantage of the life time guarrentee, then make sure you keep the reciept.
I bought a Halford Profesional raatched spanner set. Doing an engine job earlier this year, two of them broke (well, one broke, the other seized).
When I was next in town I took them into Halfords and:
"Do all Halford profesional tools have a life time guarrentee"
"Yes"
"Excellent, can I change these please"
"Of course, but you do need to bring the original receipt in"
"I dont have it, but these are very obviously Halfords profesional tools, its stamped on them, I could not have bought them from anywhere else"
"Sorry, thats the policy, no receipt, no guarrentee"

I spend quite a lot on tools, but no longer go to Halfords on a matter of principal.

Mods: If you think this is naming / shaming, then delete it.

Not true here. I've been to my local Halfords four times with no more than the broken equipment and they have replaced it immediately with no quibbles.

Recently? It is my understanding that the policy has changed in recent months.

Halfords Pro are good VFM but I'd echo the point about keeping the receipt
I do have a big socket set ( Snap-On) but only because it was a present. In reality, most work requires only a small range of sockets so why not buy a small, good quality kit and then add the bits you want on a 'need to get' basis eg 3/8 breaker bar, small star bit set etc.
If you look around, then most places do offers most of the time.
My most recent 'bargain' was a Teng rachet socket set which was less than half price - good stuff, good price.
Mind you, I run a Morgan, so some of my nuts/bolts are AF and I think I've even got a couple Whitworths!!
