Hi all

Just purchased a Touran 2.0tdi from auction (seemed like a good idea!!). Have discovered that there is oil in the header tank on closer inspection. Has anyone else on here had this problem? and what was the outcome? I'm really hoping it's not the cylinder head and that it's maybe the oil cooler.

Any thoughts/advice on this are much appreciated. Going to get it to a garage next week to find out what the problem is and how much to fix. Am feeling so gutted at the monent!

How does the car run? Any excessive white smoke out of the exhaust, especially under load/acceleration?

Does the water level go down? Does the oil level go down? Power seem ok? Idling ok or rough?

Car runs really well with no smoke, no funny smells from heater, no temp issues, not using any fluids in the fifty odd miles that i've driven the vehicle since buying it although oil level was on the low side when i got it. Have noticed that engine only needs turning over once maybe twice when cold but needs turing over around six to eight times when engine at normal running temp!. Drained oil today and there's no water in sump which i'm hoping is a good sign. had about half a cup full of oil out of header and have flushed through and refilled system with clean water. Gettin 'hydro carbon' test done either tomorrow or Tuesday.

ps, dash disply keeps saying 'stop', 'check coolant' + engine management light is on!

All help much appreciated. Am grasping tightly onto the fact that it is gooing to be the oil cooler and not the head, fingers crossed, cheers all andd thanks for the replies so far.

Sounds like you have a good grip on the situation. Is there any way you can get someone to read the fault codes to see what the problems are with the stop engine management light??

Sniff test sounds like a good plan also, so you should be able to rule out the HG which, to be honest, it doesn't sound like it is.

Yes, i know someone with access to code reading equipment. Will hopefully get the codes read and the hydro test done at the same time. Have been told that it's a common problem for the oil cooler to go. Can't say i've found too much evidence of that on the net as yet that points to it being a 'common' problem. Will keep my fingers tightly crossed in the meantime.

Cheers

Phew! it was the oil cooler thankfully. All running well now. Cleaned the sensor in the header tank bottle and that has remedied the 'check coolant level' issue (was covered in oil !)

Thanks
