Screamer pipe

Heard about screamer pipes on turbo cars before and seen them in pics, but what does it acutally do? Any function? Lots of noise?

A screamer pipe is simply the exhaust that is diverted from the turbo by the wastegate. With a built in wastegate this is naturally routed routed back into the exhaust after the turbo, but with an external wastegate there is a separate pipe which some odd people (presumably with damaged hearing) seem to think sounds great if you just vent it straight to atmosphere. A truly awful noise.
