Golf VR6 automatic gearbox problems

hi guys just wanderin if anyone could help ,
i got given a vr6 but it had been over heated quite alot in the past and the auto box on it was in default (so only gear 3). Since then the over heating has been fixed and including the other jobs on it i changed the gearbox oil and filter. Eventually i got the garage to plug it in and read the fault codes and basically the ribbon inside the gearbox had gone. So as a last resort i cleaned all the connections again and went for a drive and for some reason its changing gears but it doesnt get gears 1 or 4. someone said it might be the gearbox speed sensor??
