Oil thirsty almera

Hello,
Firstly I'm sorry this isn't about something exciting, just hoping someone here has some experience.
My friend has called me as they have an issue with their Nissan
It's an 02 Almera S (85k miles)
They're burning a lot of oil and I think they've had excess smoke burning off.
It's been to a garage, but I don't know how reliable they are as i don't know them. Their diagnosis is ring failure.
Now I accept this could be the case, but don't know if they've done compression and leak checks.
I'm suspicious of a blocked breather system, or flame guard into oil filter. I will be checking these when I see the car. I'll also be checking comps and leaks so does anyone know what size plugs are in this engine so I take the right size tools.
Anyone here with similar experience, any advice on what else to check with these engines?
