Impreza Diff Oil change problem
Discussion
OK so what I thought would be an easy job has turned out not to be. After completing the job I notice the fresh oil weeping from the drain plug. I thought I would tweak it up a bit but now seem to have threaded something. Having tried plug in the drain socket it is still threaded. This leads me to think I have thread the socket and need to change the diff plate, is it likely I'm right or any other ideas?
It sounds like you are saying you've stripped the threads ? Is that correct ?
Actually a very difficult thing to do on an Impreza I'd have thought. You sure you havent done something else ?
If it is, then yes you'll need a new cover unless you can manage to repair in situ, but that too will be awkward.
So is the plug not tightening ?
spinning round ?, tight but leaking ?
Obvious thing is to remove the plug and look to see if the threads are stripped

Yeah now the drain plug just spins. The thread looks ok on the plug, i fear i have stripped the plate thread.
Sounds very likely. It is only aluminium and really doesnt need to be that tight.Pretty sure you'll need to remove the diff. Fixing in situ may be doable, but there is a risk of debris getting into the diff, so not really worth it.
