Friend of mine has a nice X-reg 330d Touring (E46). He's just spent a lot of money on getting it through its MOT but now it appears there might be a problem with one of the diesel injectors. Local garage (regular people he uses, not a BMW franchise) is quoting £400 to investigate and possibly fix but of course even then can't guarantee that's the problem. Mate is now considering getting rid of the car as he just doesn't fancy the gamble. A quick scope round tintanet indicates this can a bit of a problem with this vintage of BMW diesel, just trying to get the injectors out can be a nightmare apparently. Anybody any experience of this? Is it worth my pal persevering? I'd love the car myself tbh but there's no way I'm going to make him a cheeky offer, he's a pal after all. Plus I'm not sure I fancy the gamble myself, I'm seeing a lot of 'great but expensive to maintain' type stories on this particular model.

I know they perform well. But I wouldnt buy any BMW diesel. Reliability of any of them doesnt seem to be a strong point.

I've just seen a youtube video of someone trying to get an BMW injector out in his garage using a massive lever and pulley system and an awful lot of force.

Here's how this guy got his diesel injector out -

Wonder if BMW 'technicians' follow a similarly high-tech approach - and how much would they charge for it?

My brother just took the injectors out of his 320D - he was a bit worried after seeing the the YouTube videos, but they came out easily enough. A local Bosch specialist wants £500 to rebuild them though, he was surprised the car was even running they were in such a state.

Are they pressed in or something ?

Evidently - but apparently they have a tendency to weld themselves in over time.

My pal is still trying to decide what to do with his 330d Touring. I don't suppose he has much choice really other than to get the injector sorted but he's p1ssed off having just spent several hundred notes on the MOT to be faced with this potentially scary additional expense. It's a £4k car I suppose. Difficult one for him.

Bmw's diagnostic software can test the injectors & get a read out of there efficiency so can tell you which one is faulty but also if the others are on their way out.
It is not so much a common fault as they normally fail at high miles & are a mechanical part, but are expensive which on an older high mileage motor can be hard to justify. Best to either bite the bullet & get all 6 done or get rid of the car.

Another thing that can cause running faults & also expensive failures is the cyclonic breather filter which fits behind a panel on the cam cover (take air filter out it can be seen towards the rear of the engine) if this becomes blocked it can cause very severe problems so for iirc @ £20 its money well spent. This part is also on the 2000cc td.

Thread resurrection time....

Got myself a 330D touring a couple of months back, and it was running very nicely until last weekend when it started to lose power and misfire intermittently. It'd be running fine, then all of a sudden power would drop off, but if I managed to get it over 3k rpm it would start working again. As I was 250 miles from home at the time I just had to get it home anyway, but during the journey it developed into a total misfire and power loss, so much so that flat out in 4th it would only get up to 80 and dropping it into 5th it'd slow down. No black smoke out the back, just no grunt and piss-poor consumption. And very occasionally it would start working properly again, pulling like the proverbial for a couple of minutes, then off it goes.

It starts fine, idles OK, then starts misfiring.

What are my options - is there anything I can check at home or does it need to go into an injector specialist for a diagnosis?

You could point an infra red temp sensor at each branch of the manifold and see if it is just one cylinder down or random.

sold a 330d touring a few months ago which i had spent a LOT of money on- new gearbox, injectors, turbo etc etc

try sticking through some premium diesel- it used to make a huge different to performance- can would go from hesitating and misfiring to pulling like a train.

oh and try replacing the ful filters- mine looked like they ha never been replaced at 130k!

I've got a slight problem with one of my injectors on my 330D and it's running a bit rough on idle.

My garage said that the injector alone is £310 + VAT. Fitting, due to it being stuck in the block (seems a common problem). So the fitting could be up to £250 depending on how long it takes to get the old one out.

An alternative i found on another forum was to pur BK244 into the fuel tank. It's a fuel system cleaner and a few reviews i've read say it's really good.

It'll arrive soon, so once i've had it in for a week, i'll report if anything has changed. For £20 it can't do any harm! If it doesn't work it'll cost me over £600 to get it sorted!
