I've had that fault due to a failed seal in a master/slave cylinder, even when there's been no loss of fluid, but other options are that the diaphragm spring in the centre of the clutch plate has failed or gone over-centre, or the clutch actuating arm (the 'lever' that the slave cylinder pushes that disengages the clutch) has bent, failed or come adrift in some way.

You might be able to get some indication if you get under the car and watch the clutch actuating arm move while someone depresses the clutch pedal.

Bottom line, though, is that it's fked, so unless you want to get into replacing hydraulics or changing clutch components yourself, get it recovered to a garage who will be able to both diagnose and repair the fault.
