if the clutch centre diaphram has failed would it still start up in gear & drive thought if the clucht components had broken down drive would not be availible ?

Yes, most likely it would still transmit torque from the motor to the gearbox. The diaphram is part of the mechanism to releases the clutch.

if the diaphragm has collapsed. then it WOULD NOT necessarily have enough strength to clamp the friction plate to the flywheel. thus, a total loss of drive.

best burn it i am afraid.....
