Boxes seem to be fairly strong. It'll likely bust liners/block or head gaskets first.

Purely going on the very unscientific measure of it is about twice the weight of any gearbox I have picked up I would say lots. All I have to say is do not swagger up to one claiming you will easily bench press it into position from under the car!

It'd be from a MR2 mk2 2ltr turbo (i.e. the US version). I'm looking to put around 400HP through one...

Yeah the E153 will hold that if it's in good working order.

Take it that it will be the standard lump, i.e not an engine conversion?

I was looking (very high level) at using a lot of an MR in a special I'm budgetting. My plan was to use a hartley V8 but I'm struggling to find any less than $28K.

Have you considered a 2GRFE?

Weighs less than the 3SGTE and puts out 320bhp in NA form with some simple mods, can be stroked out to 4.0 and bolts up to the E153 turbo tranny.

Sounds like an interesting project. Feel free to ask any questions in here i might be able to help you with or email me direct on OlberJ@Gmail.com if you dont wanna be too open with it all.

Cheers,
Olie
