Next weekend I am picking up a 1600 xflow for my Escort, which had a fast road cam, lightened/balanced flywheel, stage 2 unleaded head - all fitted about 200 miles ago. Before putting it in the car, I wonder if anyone could give me an idea of how much it would cost to rebore this to 1700cc to make better use of the spec?

Cheers.

Considering it would need totally stripped, new pistons fitted, then rebuilt.

It certainly would not be cheap. Several hundred quid at minimum, but likely 1k+

if an engine is fresh built and works well, why do you want to overbore to 1690cc,which is a 90 thou overbore( cheap hepolite pistons) and then leave it with one overbore left to 83.5mm which is 1699cc ( expensive forged pistons). I would leave it as it is for now and when it needs refresh consider it then. crossflow blocks are getting rarer by the day, so every rebore means another chance of it living goes.
If you do want to overbore it, as said, to do it properly, by the time you have got the pistons weighing the same, rebore, dry builds etc, you are talking 4 figures. Yes you can just throw it together, but you pays your money.................

OK thanks; thought while it was out of the car it would be an opportunity to effectively make it a 'new' engine. Seems to run OK so I will live with a bit less power and keep the cash in the bank.
