Oil filter problem on Vintage engine
Discussion
My 1928 Vauxhall 20/60 is fitted with its original by-pass oil filter system. I have learned that the filter is very basic consisting of simply an cloth bag affair to catch the debris in the oil. The filter is encased in its own metal cylinder which is sealed, at one end is the attachment for oil in/out of the filter, this is an one way valve system.
The filters are now obsolete and almost impossible to find for purchase, therefore I was considering replacing this system (keeping all the old parts safe for future owners) with an Flexolite system. However, I have been told elsewhere that the Flexolite spin on/off filters are unsuited to my engine and could cause problems, such as too much oil flowing to the OHV train and almost flooding it. Its said that the efficiency of the system with the flow rates being to high and possibly starving the bottom end of oil??
I would very much welcome advise and comment as this is now an real problem to me. Thanks.

Thanks Gavin, I'm also an nerd when it comes to postings of pics and scans unfortunately but when my Son comes over I will get him to do that for me (week or two). Meanwhile I have been thinking if I have the end of the steel cannister sliced cleanly off perhaps I can remove the old filter and replace it with some clean material of some description. The car only covers about 800 miles yearly so that would last ten years. Any suggestions. Thanks again.
Well, my Alvis has no oil filter at all, and has survived happily for 76 years. If you only do 800 miles a year I think you could run quite happily with no filter at all, particularly with an annual oil change. If you want to protect the engine fit a modern air filter, which will stop the abrasive particles getting in in the first place.
