Mallory Distributor
Discussion
Hi All,
I have fitted a MALLORY MAGNETIC BREAKERLESS DISTRIBUTOR WITH VACUUM ADVANCE to my Rover V8 3.5 injection, the engine runs and drives well but when I rev the engine at 1/2000 rpm the timing advances too much. ie 37 degrees. However when the revs rise above 2000 rpm it drives great. Any thoughts?
The distributor model no 4264311 came with a set of different coloured springs. The instructions say for YT and YH advance you can set up on top of the distributor but my set up VA is at the side of the distributor. I do not want to take the distributor out until I have some advice, ie what colour springs to fit or things I should know, any help or advice would be appreciated!

please specify what you mean by "too much advance" ??
37deg BTDC is a perfectly resonable advance value at low speed and light load for a slow burning rover V8 !!
Does it "pink" when you go to WOT at low rpm?? if so, just turn the entire distributor clockwise a few degrees till it stops pinking.

Hi, thanks for your reply!
To confirm, NO it doesn't PINK.
The engine ticks over at 800rpm, but as soon as you go to accelerate at lo-revs to engine hesitates and bogs.. Feels like it wants to stall. However, past 2000rpm the engine performs well without any problems. Maybe there is something else up?
To confirm, it is a 3.5 RV8 with 3.9 RV8 injection system fitted. Would a stronger spring help the Mallory Distributor?

Hi I think bog is the wrong word ,the engine dies momentarily. My thoughts are that it advances so quickly that it is firing too early, in effect trying to go backwards.
I hope that makes sense, looking at the imfo that came with the distributor there are differant colour coded springs to alter the advance curve.

Assuming it's the old "flap type" lucas ems thats doing the fuelling, i'd be checking:I hope that makes sense, looking at the imfo that came with the distributor there are differant colour coded springs to alter the advance curve.

1) the tps sensor and it's "home position"
2) the flap meter
A momentary "bog" on tip in is definately a fuelling issue. To much ignition advance on tip-in and you will hear it "pink" a couple of times before it runs up (you used to hear this all the time on old cars where people tried to drive off at <1000rpm and as they tipped in, tack-tack-tack could be heard!
As mentiomed, 37 degrees sounds petty much like MBT to me at low speed, so fine!
ETA:
oops, missed the bit where you said it's got a 3.9 ems (hot wire), still check the tps, because that's what fires the transient fuelling demand. which 1)is less needed as rpm increases, and 2) is most required from a fully closed throttle
RETA:
if you simply want to check without as much ignition advance, simply remove the vac pipe from the vac advance capsule (block the pipe so the plenum doesn't have an "air leak") this will then run the WOT ignition angle which will be much less advanced than the low load value. If this doesnt change anything you know it's not an ignition issue!!
