low milage car which hasn't had an oil change in 6 years?

Would you buy it? it's an old w126 merc 500, 27k, looks mint but hasn't had the oil changed since 2004, which was only 3k miles ago.

garage says it's fine as modern oils don't break down over time but something is making me nervous...........

thoughts?

The only thing I would want to know is how the 3k miles were clocked up in 6 years, constant 2 miles journeys every other day or longer occasional runs? could possibly have bearing on general condition of mechanicals.

Give it a flush through and a good service. Oil may break down it's composition over time and not be "optimum" but still has good lubrication properties if not overheated.
