Really slim silencer to help ground clearance on a V8 ?
Discussion
Hi,
Re my ongoing project, are just about to refit the exhaust system on my Marcos and looking at some possible options to help ground clearance at the rear.
My present exhaust system has 2 silencer boxes with 4x3" tail pipes, the silencers sit under the chassis which is approx 7" from the ground (roughly measured whilst car empty) the present silencers are 4 and half inches thick so allowing for approx half inch gap between chassis and silencer it looks like only 2" ground clearance, not a lot !!

Had an idea of replacing both boxes with one very slim at only 2" tall, but very wide silencer box centrally fitted with two inputs, and then one centrally fitted oval chrome tailpipe again slim to exit just under the spare wheel bulge, note the engine is a 5.0V8.
This would give me more clearance and smooth out the rear lines of the the car, as you can see at present it just hangs too low like a afterthought.
Would a 2" thick silencer work and how would i get one made ?

Without seeing the underside of the car and how much room is available, it's hard to advise.
Best bet is to take it to a specialist fabricator and they can build or advise better.
Is there any room in the middle of the car for silencers ?
OJZ Engineering will be able to make anything you need, and does a superb job.
And to add...slim silencers will quieten less than full round. Simply because the more area there is around each pipe in the silencer, the more ability it has to silence.

Like the man says, a specialist builder will easily make you a couple of slim boxes for that system. Question is, do you really need boxes at all? its a V8 which naturally sounds sweeter than say, an inline motor, plus that H-pipe helps to smooth things out too..
I run an s/s straight through system on my '87 Corvette fitted 5 years and 50k miles ago i.e no boxes at all and 60mm dual pipes from the headers all the way out the back. Its quiet at normal speeds and sounds glorious when I floor it, no mot hassles either.
Go on! ..you know you want to!
