I thought I would try this forum rather than the Jaguar one for now. Has anyone any experience in stripping down and rebuilding the Jaguar 4.0 AJ6 (NOT the AJ16) engine? I understand parts for the internals are almost none existent. But these are apparently solid and reliable engines. Mine in my XJS is just on 100,000 miles and I was wondering if some kind of 'freshening up' would be recommended. Its does smoke (blue) a bit on start up, not always, and burn a little oil. Hardened valve stem seals? Also, it has the slightest mis-fire, and I mean very slight and I don't know where from, ie fuel or spark. I changed the plug leads to Magnecor ones but still see signs of arcing on the the leads. It also gets around 15 mpg according to the trip computer for highway driving.

Any comments on experience with these engines and working on them would be welcome information.

Thank you

This may sound strange to there might be no valve stem oil seals fitted.

I used to do these engines at the factory , we did a lot for high oil consumption we fitted new rings and rehoned the bores (they were normally glazed) , new stem seals and lap the valves properly . Also check the leads as I've had lots of trouble with magnecore leads and won't now use them . The cranks are bullet proof
