Hi all,

I need a new steering gaiter for the MOT, at short notice, as mine is split. The quickest I can get one delivered is 2-3 days, so I am trying to find an temporary solution, as I will be left without a car this saturday if I don't.
Would the car pass the MOT with a bike inner tube acting as the gaiter? All properly fixed in place of course!

Thanks!

You can buy universal rack gaiters from motor factors etc.

Really? When I called they said "dealer part only" as soon as I mentioned what I needed! I'll look into it thanks.

As above - you can get universal split ones, which you can fit without removing the driveshaft, they just superglue together. I've used one in the past with no troubles.

You can often/sometimes (nothing quite like hedging your bets is there?) clean the split area with carb cleaner or brake cleaner making sure you dont force the chemicals inside into the remaining grease and then repair the split segment with a decent superglue (Powerbond 806 is a very good example of such glue) that will hold, done properly for a while

Long enough for the "gaiter in the post" to arrive

Or just before the next MOT

don't ask...

You don't normally fit steering rack gaiters to the driveshaft...

I'm confused - what car is this for? I had to do both gaiters for a 35 year old car, of which less than 1,000 are still registered, last year and they came next day.

The very rare and exclusive Golf Mk3 Turbo Diesel, only 500 millions ever made!

The main dealer needed to order it from Volkswagen as it's too old...

I sorted it now, thanks all. (didn't have time to get the other bits sorted yet though, so it will be on the drive for the next few days frown)
