We run a 2006 Audi A3 S Line as a company hack and it's now done about 65k miles, and has been always been pretty good, excellent economy and went like a diesel powered missile, suprising quick actually.

Now its started making an intermittent knocking sound from the engine on tickover, that seems to come and go.

It's a deep, low clunking that seems to come from the bowls of the engine and be accompanied by the engine shuddering slightly with each clunk. It will be sat ticking over and kind of go tick tick tick tick tick Clunk Clunk Clunk tick tick Clunk Clunk tick tick... You get the idea!

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Is it similar to the sound of an engine about to stall?
Do revs drop when this happens?

No, the engine speed doesn't seem to change and it doesn't sound much like a pre-stall noise either.

Thanks,

Tim

Crikey, I'm stumped.
I guess it's possible the engine mounts are on their way out?

It's only at idle?
By intermittent and "come and go" do you mean it's random or is it a regular pattern?

sounds like the dual mass flywheel might be on the way out, try putting it into 5 gear ans slip the clutch a bit on idle, if it ge.ts worse its the flywheel

Injector on its way out? Could cause a "knock".

Dual-mass flywheel, almost deffo. They quite often last for ages doing this, next symptom is an annoying 'buzz' at certain revs which sounds like an exhaust heat-shield is loose.

Has this a lot with a fleet of VW passate estates, flywheel was the problem on several and I had it on mine before it was changed last week for a new gold estate

Does the noise go away when the clutch is pushed in? it went away on my passat

Thanks for the help chaps,

I'll check to see if the noise stops when the clutch is pushed in.

Right... The rattling/clonking noise stops when the clutch is pushed in.

Looks like the dual mass flywheel?

Hi All, I have a 2007 Audi A4 2.0 tdi (BRE Engine code, 82000 miles).

Looking like the flywheel is on it's way out.

Always had a strange 'wobble' at idle, was told it was normal but I was not convinced.

I have now developed a knocking noise, usually always at start up but now after a run as well, tried what you said on here and put it into fifth and pulled up the clutch pedal, the knocking noise got louder and faster!

Strange thing is, and maybe unrelated, the knocking seems to go away when I put the air con on?

Your help would be much appreciated. To the guy who initially posted, did it turn out to be the flywheel?

Cheers
Davy

Hello can anyone help me, I have only had my Audi A3 2.0 TDi (AUTO) for about a month, but I think I have bad luck with cars (hence my name) when I bought the car is seemed to be ok, but then after a few weeks, when I was free rolling there was a major jerking, but once I accelarated there was no problem. It was only when im crawling in gear it jerks and even stalled on a few occasions.

Unfortunately after that I had bit of accident whereby I managed hit the bottom car on a led bollard, it tore the undertray and cracked the oil sump, since then every time I go from being stationary I get a SINLGE knock, it also happens when I solw down and accelarate. But whislt driving there is NO problem. A friend of mine works at Audi he took it into work for one of their guys to check it out, Audi said there "COIULD" be a problem with the Mechatronics, Fly wheel or/and Clutch but ultimately I need to replace the gear box with 2nd had one (suggested by audi).......This is where the plot thickens, the guy from Audi told my friend to "PUSH IT" on the way home.....so by the time my friend got the car back to me the SINGLE KNOCK has turned into a loud humming sound the now the car sound absolutely F****ED.

My questions are

1. Even thou audi checked the car should i still get a 2nd opinion?
2. Can anyone tell what kind of cost im am looking at for a 2nd hand gear box ?
3. Also does any one know for sure what the problem is?

Thank you in advance
