audi A8 auto gearbox

i have just aquiered a 1998 audi A8 4.2 quattro and am hoping some one could answer a few q's i have, firstly when the gear box changes down its very jerky but on the up change is realy smooth, is this normal. also on start up all works right but the lights will only turn on to side lights (no matter where the stalk), the indicaters will not work (but the hazads do) and the wipers will not function. it seems to me its a fault in the contols (where the stalks are) i turn off the engine and start it again and all works fine. any help would be much appreciated

The A8 auto boxes can be fragile. Have a search on here might shed some light on the gearbox issue.
