It is a 2002 1.8 petrol Mondeo Mk3.
The engine cover has "Durotec HE" written across it. Its done 125,000 miles

Over the last 6 months it has been burning more & more oil and things came to a head today when it went for its MOT. It would not pass on emisions, but it did fill the garage up with smoke pretty quickly while the tester was trying to get it to pass. In the end he gave up and declared "you need a new engine mate".

I am guessing it is piston rings (but correct me if you think I am wrong), and I am guessing there is no easy (legal) way to get it through an MOT such as adding snake oil additive, even if this does no long term good? (but again, correct me if I am wrong).

Would a different graqde of oil make any difference (the oil is only about 1,000 miles old, it was serviced a couple of weeks ago).

On the basis that getting the engine rebuilt will cost more than the car is worth, my intension is to pick up a second hand engine & get the local garage to throw it in for me.

According to the book, there are two different versions of this 1.8 engine, one putting out 110BHP, and one putting out 125BHP.

Firstly, how do I tell which I have, and secondly, does it matter which I put in?

Any comments (other than "throw it away" will be appreciated)

As you say, it isn't really worth anything, so find the cheapest s/h engine you can, get it thrown in the hole and cross your fingers!!

Yes, thats the plan.

But can I get any 1.8 petrol engine out of a mk3 mondeo, or do I have to be careful about exactly what engine I buy?
